Long duration fasting should be relatively safe for most people. However, fasting is not ideal for everyone. Be careful.
We highly recommend consulting your doctor before undergoing a fast to make sure it is right for your specific situation.
Pay special attention if any of the following apply to you:
- You have certain medical conditions – Consult a doctor. Examples could include low blood pressure, being immunocompromised, conditions sensitive to electrolyte imbalance (not an exhaustive list).
- You are on certain medications – Consult a doctor. Examples could include medications that affect blood glucose, kidney function (not an exhaustive list). Some medications and dosages may need to be adjusted.
- You cannot afford to lose muscle mass – Although muscle loss can be mitigated with various strategies, if you are elderly, or already have low muscle mass or have a very hard time gaining new muscle, the risk of additional muscle loss may not be worth the fast.
- You are a kid or teen – You are still growing, and consistent nutrition is preferred.
- You are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or are nursing
- You have an eating disorder
- You have abnormal hormone levels
